Are your hair care products cancerous?

According to a recent study by the Silent Springs Institute, research has shown that a large majority of
hair care products marketed towards women of color contain a number of cancer-causing ingredients.
As well as other chemicals that have been linked to syndromes such as asthma, fertility issues, weight
gain, and other health related concerns.

To be honest I had never really gave much thought about the ingredients in my hair care products. Until
I recently came across the article of the Silent Springs Institute study on the matter. The research
concluded that “80% of the 18 products tested contained high levels of chemicals that are known to
cause alterations to the endocrine system.

Which are the many different hormones found in the body.
Think of it like this, the endocrine system is very important. It is made up of the female ovaries, male
testes, and pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands. GOT YOUR ATTENTION NOW!!! This is major stuff.
That should definitely be enough to at least make you consider how serious this can be. This information
should not be ignored.

Exposure to these chemicals may cause the following health related issues:
Asthma, uterine fibroids, early menstruation, increased cases of breast and endometrial cancers, fertility
issues, obesity, and increased premature birth rates among black girls and women. And this is just to
name a few.

It is time that we begin to do research on the ingredients that are listed in our hair care products. And
we wonder why women of color have some many complications with our hair. The root of the problem
can be destroyed if we learn more about what we are putting in our hair and begin to make changes and
adjustments where it is necessary.

I’m not telling you to go and throw everything under your bathroom
cabinet away, but I am telling you to become more aware, simply by reading product labels to know
what kind of ingredients you are using on your hair and on your skin. From there learn what ingredients
and products to avoid all together and which ones are still tolerable. You may even decide to start
incorporating DIY hair care products. Either way, I want black women to start making smart choices and
do what’s best for their health.
