I love the feeling of getting new hair. It’s almost like Christmas! You rush home from your local hair boutique or from picking up your freshly order hair package from the mail box, so you can adore the hair up close and person. You finally get it home and NOW it’s time for the strand test!
So, you run your fingers through your new silky bundles and a few strands come loose. No big deal, right? But just to be sure, you run to the bathroom and grab your favorite paddle brush to do another run-through—Awe man! More strands. You say to yourself, that’s to be expected… It’s not that bad.. its only about 10-15 strands. You’ve convinced yourself not to worry and have your new prized possessions installed anyways.

About a week or two later, you’re finding large lump sums of hair in every corner in the house. Meanwhile, your boyfriend or  roommate is talking trash about how you have hair all over the place.
While some shedding is normal, it can be extremely frustrating and annoying, even maddening dealing with constant slipping and hair fall out with every comb-through or finger rack. A woman’s worst night mare is spending a small fortune on hair just to find that it sheds like a mangy street alley cat.
Gentle shedding is normal; However, your bundles or hair extensions should not shed excessively or any more, then your own hair will.

Here are a few tips as to why your extensions maybe shedding disproportionately:
  1. BAD QUALITY HAIR VENDOR– Most shedding on weaves are a result of poor wefting construction and processing by the manufacture. You should always opt to buy your extensions from a reputable dealer as much as possible.
  2.  SUBSTANDARD HAIR QUALITY – Highly discounted cheap hair is usually unhealthy, weak, dry and breaks easily. You could be experiencing breakage as opposed to shedding.

   3. LOW MAINTENANCE – Not taking any precautionary measures to ensure the lifespan of your hair extensions. Try sealing the wefts to help with extending the life span of your hair extensions.
   4. HIGH THERMAL STYLING -Too much high heat lessens the lifespan of your hair extensions
   5. APPLYING WRONG HAIR PRODUCTS – Alcohol base products will result in your hair extensions being dry and brittle causing breakage.
6.BLEACHING OR COLORING -With no natural oils, your hair extensions will become brittle and dry also resulting in breakage. You must make sure to keep your extensions moisturized at all times.
7. THE ENVIRONMENT – Climate change and hard water can reap havoc on your hair extensions
8.  Cutting or splitting the wefts
9.  Invasive or unnecessary puncturing and piercing of the wefts

10. Performing the strand test incorrectly:  When you first receive your hair extension you should use a large tooth comb and gently comb starting from the bottom ends combing downward and working your upwards towards the weft, but always combing downward.  This method gently detangles hair as well as creates less friction. Which allows for you to determine if the hair is shedding in long strands from the weft or short strands (an indication of breakage and not shedding.)

Good quality hair extensions should only shed very little. In terms, you should only see a few strands in your comb, brush or if you run your fingers through it. When I say a few strands, I mean no more than about 5.
If there are trails of hair all over your house, car and everywhere else you go! This is clearly a sign of excessive shedding and poorly constructed hair.
Until next time my sisters, stay strong but be gentle (with your comb/brush)
