How to Stop Hair Breakage
Before it even Happens
BREAKAGE: We’ve all dealt with it at one point of our hair journey. It’s not something any of us would wish to experience again though. Dry, brittle hair with flaky strands that break off cannot be compared to anything cute. Breakage almost makes bad hair days a frequent occurrence. Life is already hard sis, why would we want to make it harder?
Even though breakage is unavoidable, there are measures that one can put in place to have it in control. In this article, I will be sharing the common causes of hair breakage and what you can do to contain it.
-
Lack of Moisture
Dehydrated hair is more prone to breaking. You may want to keep your hair optimally hydrated by showing your strands the love they crave for. Start your hair routine with the right shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner. Take into account whether your hair has been subjected to hard water as this can lead to increased porosity, resulting in weakened strands which in turn break. Invest in a shower head with a filter that gets rid of harsh minerals, leaving your hair lustrous.
-
Excessive Heat Styling
Over time, heat styling makes your hair weaker and prone to a lot of breakage. It’s worse if you use heat styling tools without applying a heat protector. If you really have to use heat styling tools, be sure to set them to the lowest temperatures. Be sure to generously apply a heat protector while at it.
-
Blow Drying Wet Hair
If you’d wish to blow dry your hair after washing, allow it to air dry for some time. Blot your hair with a microfiber towel that has less friction as compared to terry-cloth turbans. Again, apply a heat protector while at it. In addition to this, avoid stretching your hair with a comb while incinerating it with hot air. It is not healthy for your hair.
-
Exposure to Chemicals
Anyone with colored hair understands the struggle of maintaining healthy, strong, colored hair. Some people with severe chemical damage are sometimes forced to make the big chop and start afresh with virgin hair. Salon grade treatments are a great option for rebuilding broken bonds. If you are a fan of chemical straightening, you may want to switch to keratin treatment which coats your strands without messing up with your cortex.
-
Cotton Pillow Cases
You may not believe this but it is true. Sleeping on cotton pillow causes your hair to break off more because of the friction created between the fabric and your hair as you toss and turn. Replace your cotton pillow cases with silk or satin pillow cases instead. Such pillow cases are designed with skin and hair health in mind.
Bonus
An unbalanced diet cause your strands to be weak. A protein rich diet helps in the repair of weak hair spots along the shaft, causing the breakage to ward off. However, excess proteins can result in brittle hair, and excess moisture makes the strands to flexible. You need to strike a reasonable balance.
humility and insight is not a surprise. Sending you a massive hug!
